TikTok is the source of an endless flow of “food hacks”, the latest one being the “Tortilla Wrap Hack” where instead of rolling the wrap, a slit is cut to the middle of the wrap and each quarter filled with the various ingredients. For someone who always overstuffs a wrap, making it impossible to roll properly, the hack is quite genius so I set about to use the hack to make what I call TikTok Braaibroodjies.

No South African braai is complete with the ubiquitous braaibroodjie. A toasted cheese sandwich cooked on the barbecue, consisting of two slices of white bread (no fancy sourdough please) with a filling of cheddar cheese, sliced tomato and onion. I used the same ingredients for the TikTok braaibroodjies, except for replacing the bread with a tortilla wrap. Cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, sliced red onion, filling the last quarter with some mozzarella cheese for extra melt. Once the quarters are filled, start folding each quarter from the bottom left until you have a triangle, ready to be placed on the coals (or a warm pan) to cook until all the ingredients are warm and the cheese melted.

To be honest, I only attend barbecues for the braaibroodjies, potato salad, garlic bread and peppermint crisp tart. In fact, I attended a braaibroodjie party last year with no braaied meat in sight, just delicious braaibroodjies. And I am quite the traditionalist when it comes to braaibroodjies. Mature cheddar cheese, tomato and onion. No chutney, no mayonnaise, no pesto and definitely no truffle oil.
