Ring in the New Year with a cocktail that’s as sophisticated as the occasion. This Rosemary Smoked Negroni combines the timeless charm of the classic Negroni with a smoky herbal twist, adding just the right amount of glam to your festivities.

I love a Negroni. It is without a doubt my favourite cocktail and apéritif. Although it is a tough choice between the original and a Negroni Sbgaliato, the fabulous “mistake” said to be invented by bar owner Mirko Stocchetto in the 1970s. He mistook a bottle of sparkling wine for gin while making a Negroni at Bar Basso in Milan, creating a spritz version of a Negroni in the process and is far too good to just have one.

This Rosemary Smoked Negroni follows the original recipe of equal parts gin, vermouth (Martini) rosso and Campari. But added before you give it a shake is a squeeze of orange juice, a splash of lemon juice, simple syrup if you want some sweetness and an egg white to create the foamy crown. For the herby infusion, light a sprig of rosemary until it starts to smoke and place a cocktail glass on top to capture the smoke. Let it smoke while you mix the Negroni, then turn the smoke infused glass upright and pour in the cocktail. Serve with a sprig of fresh rosemary and a twist of orange peel. Cheers!
