Wimbledon is all about strawberries and cream (and tennis). Even The Cavendish, the restaurant situated at court no 1 describe strawberries as the true icons of The Championship. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the start of Wimbledon 2025, serving an ace with this deliciously cheeky spin on Wimbledon’s iconic treat, Boozy Strawberries and Cream.
The Boozy Strawberries and Cream is possibly the ultimate summer dessert. It is a sublime mix of strawberries, Cointreau, lime juice and zest, just a sprinkle of sugar to get the maceration going and velvety smooth cream to make it extra luxurious.
The best part that it is not overly sweet, but rather refreshingly tangy.
The lime juice and zest is non negotiable, you want that aromatic, almost bitter citrus notes to play off the slightly tart strawberries. The Cointreau adds a punch of bitter orange but you can easily replace it with a floral and botanical gin, Grand Marnier or Solerno that is made with blood oranges. Or keep it clean with a splash of vodka, a flavoured vodka might be too overpowering but really it is all up to you.
The cream is softly whipped. I really don’t think you need to sweeten it but do add a teaspoon of vanilla extract (click the link for my recipe you make your own homemade vanilla extract).
The best part is spooning the boozy, citrusy liquid that has gathered in the bowl over the strawberries and cream. Pure bliss.
From what I’ve read, the tradition of serving strawberries and cream at Wimbledon dates back to even before lawn tennis was added to the activities and the first tournament in 1877. The Wimbledon Championship falls right in the middle of the summer strawberry season and the combination was served to spectators as a fashionable treat. Today, over 27 tonnes of strawberries are consumed during the fortnight, making it as essential to the event as the grass courts and white dress code.
This Boozy Strawberries and Cream recipe is ideal for summer entertaining, garden parties, or just watching the match from home and I do hope you enjoy it.
