Last Sunday I had the pleasure of photographing a long table lunch at the beautiful home of Isabella Niehaus on the Cape West Coast. Isabella’s fellow cook on the day was Nina Timm, from the very popular blog My Easy Cooking.
I met Nina at the end of last year when she so kindly invited me on to her weekly radio show to chat about my blog. We also spent a day before the show making all kinds of pickles, including these super easy 2 Hour Cucumber Pickles. Since then I have been a regular visitor to her blog to see what she is making.
Isabella Niehaus, the always smiling “market madam”, curates the Market at the Palms held each Saturday in Woodstock. The market’s focus is on traders from the West Coast and is always a pleasure to attend (and eat your way through). Isabella regularly opens her beautiful seaside home on the dune in Langebaan for the long table lunches which she hosts with guest cooks, special events such as book launches or for private occasions.
I was there with friend and collaborating photographer Francois Pistorius and it is so easy to see why photographers and stylists clamour to use Isabella’s space for photoshoots. The space offers an array of textures, colours and gorgeous play with light that makes it impossible to put your camera down.
Guests feasted on home made delights that included West Coast Mussels, Lamb Shanks and Samp and the most divine Malva Pudding with Amarula Ice Cream. The lamb was a recipe from Nina’s new book, Easy Cooking from Nina’s Kitchen. I also discovered that not only is Nina an incredible cook but also a wonderful storyteller when she told us the story behind the dish and had me thinking back to our own family road trips through the Karoo.
The team from Four Paws Wines were on hand to chat about their wines and to make sure glasses were always filled.
It truly was a wonderful day out of the city, having huge fun behind the camera. Added with fantastic food and that special West Coast hospitality I hope I can experience it again soon.
