ABOUT Hein van Tonder
For as long as memory serves, I have references and recollections that involve food.
This passion has brought me to create and develop Heinstirred. As a South African food photographer, stylist and writer based in Cape Town, I’m at my happiest in the kitchen, behind the camera or better still, both.
My work has been featured on food24.com, food52.com, Huffington Post USA, Canada and UK, Buzzfeed, The Kitchn, brit.co and feedfeed.info. I contribute regularly to the Sunday Times Food Weekly, as well as develop and photograph recipes for clients such as Marie Claire Cuisine et Vins de France, Checkers and Bibo. Photography clients include Taste Magazine, Food and Home Entertaining, One and Only Cape Town, The Test Kitchen, Nobu Cape Town and Pink Lady Apples SA.
Awards include being a Finalist in the Marks and Spencer Food Portraiture as well as the Food Blogger categories in the 2016 Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year competition; Category Runner Up in the 2016 Njord Sustainable Food Photo Competition, Finalist in the Food Blogger category of the 2015 Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year competition and Runner Up in the Food & Wine Category of the 2015 African Blogger Awards.
Ever evolving as a food lover, my favourite pastime is travelling to eat with itineraries built around flavours, meals and restaurants. My latest eating trips include Beirut and Copenhagen, allowing me to discover cuisines that easily rival my love for all things Italian.
I have been most fortunate to have worked on or contribute to the following books:
La Creuzette – The Story of a House (2016) (Quivertree Publications) : Photographer
Cobb Recipe Book (2016) : Photographer, Stylist and Contributor
Sunday Times Food Weekly 4 (2015) (Times Media) : Contributor and Contributing Photographer
This blog is as much a personal food and photography journey as it is a current reflection of my portfolio of work. Get in touch with me regarding recipe development, brand content, food photography, styling, lifestyle photography and writing. My portfolio can be viewed here and my video channel here
I work mostly in natural light (of which there is in abundance in Cape Town) with a Nikon D750 and various lenses to best capture the images and flavours. Most photographs and recipes are available for purchase with sales managed by StockFood.
